In my short time here on planet Earth, I’ve seen and experienced quite a lot in my years and one thing I know for a fact is your friends play a major part in what you become in life.
One quote I really love is, “show me your friends and I’ll show you your future”. I’m not sure whose quote it is but it is so powerful and profound. We are living in times where average won’t do to become distinguished in your field of endeavour; your friends will play a major part in you hitting the target called distinction.
Who are your friends? What do they want to achieve in life? What are their values and what do they bring to your table of life? These are four very important questions which will take a lot of soul searching for you to honestly answer them.
I am a people person and as a Keynote Speaker, Entrepreneur and Life Coach, I love challenging, inspiring, motivating and equipping people how to become students, entrepreneurs or leaders of distinction. One thing I always tell my audience is my circles of friends are people of excellence and have the same mandate, mission and mind-set of distinction. I go on to tell my audience the reason being when I succeed all of us succeed and when they succeed, I succeed too. That’s the law of friendship, the success and excellence of those around you will eventually rub off on you.
In Africa, there are so many opportunities to become distinguished in your industry but unfortunately there are many distractions too. For example, in Nigeria, the film industry; Nollywood has exploded at an incredible rate but with it’s explosion, many people have not fulfilled their vision and maximised their time because they have put all their focus and effort on the latest plot and movies. Now I’m not saying watching Nollywood is bad but with 2014 soon ending and 2015 just around the corner, it is critical your friends are focused on the future knowing the future has just arrived.
The reason why most people get distracted is either, lack of vision, laziness, procrastination or fear. I believe it is essential that you also inspire, challenge, empower and encourage your friends to have a clear and defined vision, jump out of the comfort zone, manage their time and walk by faith. How can you implement this? The way to do this is by let your vision speak for you. When your vision is clear and defined, the people around you will react in two ways. They will either rise up and raise the bar of excellence or roll over and refuse your distinction. When people refuse to be challenged but rather remain in their comfort zone, it is important you separate yourself from these people, please note, I didn’t say hate or disregard them but the truth of the matter is some people love a life of mediocrity and laziness and to become distinguished in your industry you need people who are like minded and understand the truth about excellence and the lies about mediocrity.
I want to set you a goal, the three to five friends who you regularly interact with, what answers you will get when you answer my four previous questions? The answers you receive I believe will determine if you become distinguished whilst excelling or disdained and exhausted.
Africa is at a pivotal time in her history and in my previous blog titled; Leaders of distinction; the time is now, I wrote how and why you should become a leader of distinction. For Africa to really rise, not only do you need to become a leader of distinction but you also need to surround yourself with leaders of distinction too.
I believe my blog will cause you to be honest with yourself and make the relevant adjustments. Here’s to your success, distinction style.
You will never see an eagle of distinction flying low with pigeons of mediocrity. ~ O Anyado 2013.
